Rebetiko otherwise known as the 'Greek Blues' originated in the taverns and tekes of Greece. Formed from the country's urban subculture, Rebetiko songs are renowned for addressing the realities of society and its everyday life. Having evolved from its 'roots music' origin, Rebetiko has come to form the foundations of Greek popular music as it is known today.
Although Rebetiko is now called the Greek Blues the music is not just about being down but being carefree and having a good time!
